Yummy mustaches

I use to make chocolates with my friends all the time growing up and I remember the fun we always had, and all the fond memories while making them. The other day when I was at the craft store I saw some really cute mustache molds and I thought that Bug would really like making them. Turns out I was right!

When bug was younger he loved to help out in the kitchen. We even got him a little mixer that sat next to my Kitchenaid. We baked all the time. He use to say he wanted to grow up to be a famous chef, but sadly he got older and stopped hanging out with me in the kitchen.

Now that he is almost 12, I’m trying really hard to get him back in the kitchen. I think it’s really important for everyone to know how to cook the basics. I’ve meant so many people who didn’t know how to cook and it just blows my mind. So I’m going to make sure Bug knows how or at least the fundamentals of it.

I realized forgot the chocolates so I took Bug to Michael's with me and we got to looking at all the baking stuff . He was really impressed by all the baking “toys” and even said we should try baking some of those fancy cakes. I said “Hell yeah we should!”.   (Baby steps Mary, baby steps)

At home we cleaned the molds, got out our ramekins and started melting the chocolate. We did about 25 pieces and melted them in increments. Then we stirred the chocolate and nuked it again. We did about 30-15-10. You’ll find what works with your microwave wattage.

You can use a spoon to scoop it in like us or use a piping bag. I think using the spoon is the best way.

Fill the molds half full, tap the tray to get any bubbles out and make the chocolate even. Place the sticks in the chocolate and twist them around so the stick is fully covered. Top with the remaining chocolate till its full.

Place in the freeze for about 10-15 minutes. You can tell if its ready if the chocolate is hard, or the bottom of the tray is frosted over.

When removing the suckers, you want to twist the tray back and forth . You’ll be able to see the chocolates separate from the mold and then you’ll be able to lift them out. Once you remove them you can then place them in treat bags or eat immediately. Well actually eat after the photo ops.

*Note, when making the black if you use white, it takes a lot of the black coloring. Try using it with the cocoa chips. So its brown and black mixing. You'll achieve the color faster.

Also if you have left over chocolate you can make a mix'stache as Bug did.
